Geriatric Psychiatry
The District Mental Health Services for Older Adults Program’s staff have access to Dr. David Conn, Geriatric Psychiatrist from Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto.
In the northwest communities of Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Atikokan and surrounding areas, the Geriatric Mental Health Workers with our Program have access through videoconferencing technology to consult with Dr. David Conn on a weekly rotating basis for client assessment, case consultation and education.
This valuable service enables seniors to be assessed by a geriatric psychiatrist in their own community rather than having the expense and difficulty of travelling far distances and dealing with extensive wait times to see a specialist. This technology allows our Geriatric Mental Health Workers to enhance their skills and knowledge in treating older adults with serious mental illness or dementia as well as providing a needed service in the Kenora/Rainy River Districts.
To access this service, individuals must be on the caseload of one of our Geriatric Mental Health Workers and have a physician who supports the geriatric psychiatry assessment.
